Reading

So much happens during our reading workshop.  Children are reading with partners and discussing the books.  Children are practicing phonics skills though a program on the iPad called Lexia as well as in workbooks.  Children are meeting in reading groups to learn and to practice reading and comprehension strategies. Children are reading independently.  And, children are writing about what they read in response journals. You will find examples of all of this work in the pictures in this post as well as the following post.

Cultural Geography

Our guest speaker, Sarah, taught us how the British culture has influenced our culture from musical groups, to sports and food.  We tried a British snack food called "Twiglets."  And, then we had a surprise when Sarah appeared in a special British dress and shared it with those children who wanted to try it on.

5th Grade Buddies

We recently got together with our 5th grade friends to share non-fiction books. The 5th graders had just finished amazing pop-up books about different countries. They read them to their 1st grade buddy and taught them some cool facts. Then, the 1st graders read their Expert Books and taught the 5th graders a thing or two!

100th Day Fun!

This week we celebrated the 100th day of school. We had a visit from 'Zero the Hero', shared our amazing 100 Posters and made cool creations using pattern blocks and unifix cubes.

Perserverance

We have been reading books in which characters show the trait of "perseverance."  After reading and discussing several books, the children explained what perseverance is, why it is important and how you persevere.  Their words are captured on the picture of the poster below.  One child exclaimed during our discussion, "nothing would get done without perseverance!"  We brainstormed ways that we could do "positive self talk" to encourage ourselves to persevere.  Their talking bubbles are shown  in the 2nd photo.
