Nearby Nature: Feathers and Feet

During Nearby Nature this week students got up close to various kinds of bird feathers and feet. They learned why birds have different types of feathers and what their unique functions are. We also explored bird feet and learned that each bird has a special type of foot designed for its lifestyle.

100th Day

Friday was the 100th Day of school. During math, we sorted our 100 items to find out how much would be in each group if we had 10 groups? 5 groups? 20 groups? They counting was on!

Writing Partners

We have begun a new Opinion writing unit. Students are working with a writing partner and writing letters to the class explaining their opinions about books. They are describing character traits, favorite parts of a story or lessons learned. In each letter students are practicing stating an opinion, supporting it with evidence from the text and writing a closing.

Estimating and Graphing

Last week students practiced their estimating and graphing skills with M&M's. It was a "sweet" lesson!
Students estimated how many M&M's were in their bag. Then they sorted the M&M's by color and created a graph to display their data.

Estimating and Measuring

This week we started our measurement unit in math. Students are estimating and measuring using inches, feet and yards.

Visiting the Wax Museum

The 4th graders in Ms. Natalie's class have been studying famous Vermonters. They invited us to visit their Wax Museum performance and it was INCREDIBLE! The students were dressed as famous Vermonters and when you pushed their special button, they recited amazing facts and stories. Our class loved it! It tied in so perfectly with our reading unit of biographies.
