Play Practice has begun!

Our amazing journey has begun!  This week we had our very first play practice. The students read through their lines and sang all the songs together. They did an awesome job following along and knowing when it was their turn to speak. Next week we will learn our places on stage!

Dance Party

We have been having a blast dancing along with Just Dance for kids! With all of the indoor recess we have had lately, it has been a great way to get everybody moving and laughing. You can do this at home too...just go to You Tube and search for just dance kids.

Poet's Eyes

Last week we practiced looking at the world in unique and different ways...the way poets do.
We examined many everyday objects with our regular eyes and then we imagined what they could be if we looked at them with poets eyes. In an instant a hair comb became a monkey, a sea horse, green grass, and a lizard. What can you see?

Geography

We are studying geography. We recently learned how to use a map key and how to locate places using coordinates.

Positive Self Talk

Ms. Wideman is helping us practice positive self talk, particularly during times when we are feeling worried or stressed. The children love when she models new ideas like this one with her puppets   Then we role play the new concept to practice it. We look for opportunities during the day to continue practicing. For example, before we worked on a math assessment, we shared positive self talk with each other. The children's ideas were:  I can do this. I have practiced it.  I can ask a teacher for help. I will try my best.

Hands on Nature: Snow

We learned about snow this month thanks to Hands on Nature parent volunteers. We found out that there are 4 types of snow flakes: stellar dendrites, needles, plates and columns.  We cut out our own unique 6 sided snowflakes and examined real snow. Now we are just waiting for a real Vermont snowstorm!

Poetry

We are poets!  We are learning to see like poets, read like poets and write like poets. These are some of the strategies that we are using as poets:
Poets find a big topic that gives them a big feeling.
Poets find a small moment, detail or object that holds that big feeling.
Poets look with poets' eyes and see this thing in a new way.
Poets write about it, experimenting with line breaks.
The excitement for reading, writing and sharing poetry has grown each day.
